Special Topic Introduction
Aging is accompanied by profound alterations in lipid metabolism and endocrine function, which contribute to progressive cardiometabolic dysfunction and increase susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases. These age-related metabolic and hormonal changes highlight the critical roles of lipid metabolism and endocrine regulation in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis and influencing the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Abnormal lipid synthesis, transport, oxidation, and storage may lead to lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, myocardial injury, and vascular remodeling. In parallel, disturbances in insulin, thyroid, sex hormones, adrenal hormones, and adipokine signaling can disrupt cardiometabolic function and increase the risk of atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and other cardiovascular conditions.
This Special Issue, Lipid Metabolism and Endocrine Regulation in Cardiovascular Diseases, brings together original research, reviews, and translational studies addressing the molecular, cellular, and clinical links between lipid metabolism, endocrine signaling, and cardiovascular pathophysiology. Particular emphasis will be placed on age-related metabolic and endocrine alterations that drive cardiovascular dysfunction, as well as their underlying mechanisms and therapeutic implications. Contributions may focus on lipid-mediated myocardial and vascular injury, endocrine regulation of cardiovascular metabolism, lipid–hormone interactions, metabolic remodeling, aging-associated metabolic dysregulation, biomarkers, risk prediction, and emerging therapeutic strategies. By integrating insights from basic science, translational research, and clinical investigations, this collection aims to advance the understanding of how age-related alterations in lipid metabolism and endocrine regulation contribute to cardiovascular pathophysiology, and to promote the development of innovative strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases associated with aging.
