Special Topic Introduction

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), metal clusters, and their nanocomposites have emerged as an important class of multifunctional materials owing to their highly tunable compositions, architectures, and microstructures. Precise microstructure engineering—from atomic coordination environments and pore architectures to hierarchical interfaces and composite structures—plays a pivotal role in determining their physicochemical properties and performance in applications such as catalysis, energy storage and conversion, gas separation, sensing, environmental remediation, and biomedicine.

Recent advances in synthetic strategies, advanced characterization techniques, and computational modeling have enabled unprecedented control and understanding of the structure–property relationships in MOFs, clusters, and hybrid nanocomposites across multiple length scales. In particular, the integration of in situ characterization, multiscale simulations, and data-driven materials design has accelerated the development of multifunctional materials with tailored microstructures and enhanced performance.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for reporting the latest research advances and comprehensive reviews on the microstructure engineering of multifunctional MOFs, metal clusters, and related nanocomposites. We welcome original contributions covering innovative synthesis, microstructural characterization, theoretical modeling, structure–property relationships, and emerging applications that advance the understanding and design of these versatile materials.
